Such statements were made during the European Parliament’s Plenary Debate on the Consequences of the Destruction of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant Dam.

During the opening of the debate, Swedish Minister for EU Affairs Jessica Rossvahl said that the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant on June 6 would not have happened if russia had not started this illegal war against Ukraine.

The EU condemns this attack and stands in solidarity with the Ukrainian people, especially those injured.  The flooding that resulted from the explosion threatened the lives of thousands of people and caused an environmental disaster.

It was noted that the European Commission began to assist Ukraine immediately after the destruction of the New Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant Dam. In particular, 14 member states and the EU Civil Protection Mechanism have assisted Ukraine, including 76 boats and more than 300 water pumps.

Work is currently underway to adopt the 11th package of sanctions against russia. The EU is working with Ukraine to ensure full accountability for all crimes committed by russia.
