Members of the European Parliament approved a resolution calling for Ukraine to join NATO after the end of military operations on its territory, the European Parliament’s website reports.

425 deputies voted in favor of the resolution, 38 voted against, and 42 abstained.

The European parliamentarians expressed their expectation that the process of Ukraine’s accession to NATO would begin after the war and end as soon as possible.

Until Ukraine achieves full membership, the EU, with NATO partners, should work with Kyiv to develop a temporary security mechanism to be implemented immediately after the war.

In addition, the document expresses hope that the European Commission will give a positive opinion on Ukraine’s implementation of the seven candidate recommendations and that negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU will begin this year.

The resolution also condemns russia’s destruction of the Kakhovka Dam. It is noted that the committed act is a war crime that caused floods, environmental disasters, and ecocide in Ukraine. All those involved in this crime will be held responsible under international law.

At the same time, the parliament asks the EU to introduce a comprehensive package of measures aimed at the reconstruction and restoration of Ukraine. The recovery process should take into account the country’s immediate, medium- and long-term needs.

The parliamentarians believe the recovery should be carried out in conjunction with Ukraine’s preparations for EU accession and internal reforms.
