Many Ukrainians fled to European countries to escape the war. According to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, European governments have already spent more than 43 billion euros on sheltering Ukrainians. These costs include cash payments, housing, medical care, educational services, and necessities.

Among the European countries hosting Ukrainians, Poland has spent the most money, amounting to more than 12 billion euros.  Germany ranked second in this indicator. It spent almost 11 billion euros on Ukrainian asylum seekers.

The Czech Republic (€2.94 billion), Spain (€2.24 billion), France (€2.04 billion), Romania (€1.26 billion), Switzerland (€1.16 billion), and Italy (€1.15 billion) spent significant amounts on sheltering Ukrainians.

The study also notes that ordinary citizens of European countries have made a great effort to help Ukrainians.
