How to help relatives in the frontline areas

Experts from the All-Ukrainian Mental Health Program, “How are you?”, initiated by First Lady Olena Zelenska, offer advice on communicating with loved ones near the combat zone.

In particular, experts advise that:

  1. Don’t pressure loved ones. Staying home is an adult choice. If you can’t help with the move, don’t bring it up.
  2. Listen to the person’s arguments and try to understand. During the conversation, say: “I accept your decision, but now I want to understand why it’s important for you to stay.”
  3. Decide what you will and won’t talk about. Agree to tell each other if any topic makes you uncomfortable.
  4. Be prepared for different reactions to even simple questions. Stress can make people angry.
  5. Don’t force someone to talk to you during an air raid if they don’t want to.
  6. Try not to bring your anxiety into your communication.
  7. Stay in touch with your family by supporting them and sharing values.
