Many Ukrainian families had to leave their homes because of the russian federation. Moving can be hard for children, especially those with autism.
The following tips are designed to facilitate the child’s adaptation to the new environment:
1. If feasible, divide the new space into functional areas, such as a sleeping area, a play area, and an eating area. Even in smaller rooms, it is advisable to delineate these zones.
2. Label each zone with stickers or drawings. For example, use a spoon for the kitchen and a bed for the bedroom. Place your child’s personal belongings in each area.
3. During the first few days, go with the child and tell them what you are doing. For example: “We’re going to the kitchen to eat,” or “This is the bedroom, time to go to bed.”
4. Make each room a happy place. Sing in the shower, play a color-sorting game in the kitchen with a treat, and put stickers on the door.
