How do you calm a child in a school shelter during an air raid?

These tips were put together by the experts at the All-Ukrainian Mental Health Program, “How are you?”—a project started by First Lady Olena Zelenska.

For students in grades 1-4, the Palm breathing technique:

– Open your palms and place your right index finger on your left wrist.

– Inhale through your nose and slide your index finger up to the tip of your left pinky finger and hold. Then exhale slowly through your mouth, sliding your finger down your pinky.

– Pause and repeat the same with the other fingers of both hands.

– Rub your palms together and shake them.

For grades 5-7, the body technique “Butterfly”:

– Stand with your palms crossed over your chest and thumbs touching to form a butterfly.

– Tap your palms on your chest and breathe slowly.

For grades 8-9, practice ‘Grounding’.

– Focus your thoughts and slow them down.

– Breathe out and in slowly.

– Press your feet to the floor and extend your arms or close your hands.

– Ask yourself: What 5 objects do you see? What 3-4 sounds do you hear? What smells do you smell?

For students in grades 10-11, the “Stop” technique:

– Think about your thoughts and feelings.

– Relax your body.

– Do something to improve your state.
