How do you prepare yourself and your child for returning from abroad?

As part of the All-Ukrainian Mental Health Program “How are you?”, Olena Zelenska initiated the development of tips on how to psychologically prepare yourself and your child for returning to Ukraine.  The Ministry of Health reports this.

  1. Be prepared that your hometown may have changed a lot while you were away. Prepare your child for this, be honest, and end the conversation on an optimistic note: reassure him that together we will rebuild everything, and a peaceful life will surely come.
  2. Talk to your child about his or her fears and expectations about returning home.
  3. Do not be guided by the experiences of others. Every person, family, and child is different, and you should not expect someone else’s experience to be 100% appropriate for you. You can take some specific life hacks and adapt them to your situation.
  4. Before returning to the country, the child can hear the sound of the air raid siren. He or she should be prepared. Also, tell them what to do if they feel anxious at school or kindergarten. Explain that adults will take care of them.
  5. At home, orient yourself and your child to a safe place and the nearest shelter. Practice getting there as quickly as possible.
  6. Discuss safety on the street.
  7. Meet and reconnect with your child’s friends and their parents.
  8. Also, take care of your support circle. Decide whom you can call, write, or visit to feel supported when you need it.
  9. Develop empathy in your child. Teach him/her how to interact with people who have physical disabilities.
  10. Organize a homecoming party. This will help your child open a new chapter and relieve tension. Take a walk, have a house party, or go to the movies.
