The experts from the ‘Diia. Barrier-Free’ platform shared advice on how to support a child in this situation. The advice was prepared as part of the All-Ukrainian Mental Health Program ‘How are you?’, an initiative of First Lady Olena Zelenska.
- Explain to your child why you have decided to leave. It is important for your safety.
- Be attentive to your child’s feelings. Your child may feel sad about losing contact with home and excited about discoveries. These are all natural feelings. Share them with your child and do your best to create a sense of security for them.
- Don’t forget the basics and the daily routine – for your child and yourself. Organize your day to include time for sleep, walks, socializing with other children, and learning.
- Do not think of the move as a hiatus in your life. It is important to adapt to the new environment as quickly as possible. Try to find new social circles for you and your child, as well as opportunities for them to participate in their favorite sports.
- You can find strength in memories . Additionally, it is important to discuss the future with your child, envision it, and share your aspirations.
