Parents of children with disabilities do not require any special treatment. However, it is important to follow certain tips to avoid unintentionally hurting them with words. These tips were prepared as part of the All-Ukrainian Mental Health Program ‘How Are You?’ initiated by Olena Zelenska.
- Be polite and choose words that do not emphasize the child’s illness.
- Excessive curiosity about the diagnosis can alarm parents. Therefore, it is worth explaining why you are interested.
- First, show interest in the child’s well-being. Then, you can move on to other topics.
- Avoid stereotypes.
- Use ethical terminology only in your communication.
- Do not criticize parents or make comments to the child.
- Do not advise without authorization. Never make a diagnosis yourself.
- Do not offer to cure the child or provide contacts for miracle workers without the parents’ request.
