The European Commission has announced plans to extend temporary protection for Ukrainian asylum seekers until March 2026. The press service reports.
The European Commission has issued a statement indicating that, due to the ongoing attacks on civilian and critical infrastructure by russia, the grounds for temporary protection remain. Accordingly, the extension should be granted for a further year, from 5 March 2025 to 4 March 2026.
The decision protects EU residents fleeing russian aggression, including those already protected.
The Temporary Protection Directive allows asylum seekers to reside and access the labor market, housing, social, medical, and other assistance.
The Commission will present the idea of extending the temporary protection to the ministers at a Council on Justice and Internal Affairs meeting on 13 June. The Council will then make a decision.
