The Ukrainian Armed Forces have announced that Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi has identified the study of international humanitarian law as a priority for military personnel. This information was released by the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

In response to the ongoing armed aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine and in compliance with our state’s international obligations, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has decided to mandate the inclusion of international humanitarian law (law of armed conflict) in the training course for military personnel,” the statement said.

The General Staff also said that this decision is part of a bigger plan to make sure that the military is trained in and understands international humanitarian law. The leadership of the Ukrainian Armed Forces is very focused on this.

The Interagency Commission on International Humanitarian Law, led by Vice Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk, recently decided to add IHL to the curricula of educational institutions, and training programs for civil servants and military personnel. The Commission also includes representatives of the General Staff of the Armed Forces and the Ministry of Defense.
