The University of Alberta launched the program run by the Faculty of National Studies at the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies. The Ukrainian President’s Mission in Crimea reported this on Facebook.
The scholarship allows scholars to continue researching Crimean Tatar history, culture, and society.
The first recipient was Nara Narimanova, a Crimean Tatar. In 2014, she left Crimea for Kyiv. She recently started a doctorate in Crimean Tatar Studies at the University of Alberta.
The introduction of such scholarship programs is a crucial step in enabling the international community to form an objective view of Crimea, its history, and the role of indigenous peoples in it.
