The Ministry of Internal Affairs has prepared advice on this. Here are some of their tips:
– Don’t ask questions about captivity. They can be traumatizing.
– Don’t touch or hug someone without warning. This can be upsetting.
– Don’t downplay the experience of captivity. If a soldier shares their experience, avoid phrases like “Nothing bad happened” or “Everything will be fine.”
– Motivate and support. Talk about the present, plans, physical condition, and well-being. Also, help them find opportunities.
– Don’t make decisions for them. Help them regain control of their lives.
It can be hard to help someone who has been in captivity. But family and friends can help. Remember: love and understanding are the keys to helping them adapt.
